The Art of Editing The Documentary
This five-day hands-on workshop explores techniques of documentary editing - from the creative decisions that make a good story great, to established workflow methods for picture and sound that every editor should know.
During the week there will be screenings and deconstruction of clips from a wide range of non-fiction genres. Students will cut a number of exercises using real footage from real documentaries - looking at how editing can affect character and story, and create or alter reality. There will be frequent screening and critique of each other's work.
You'll also learn proven methods of media management for long-form projects, effective approaches to structure and storytelling, and basic principles of sound design geared towards cleaning up an edit for festivals and broadcast.
Students are welcome to take material from the class to use on their reels.
This course is specific to anyone with FCP/Avid experience interested in learning editing techniques specific to documentary and reality television.
Prerequisite
Students may edit in either Avid or Final Cut Pro, but a working knowledge of editing is expected. NOTE: This is not a course in how to edit on Final Cut Pro or Avid, however students may enroll in a certified Avid or FCP class prior to the Art of Documentary class and receive a 10% discount on both classes.
