EditFest NY, the east coast version of American Cinema Editor’s successful EditFest series, (launched in June 2009 at The Director’s Guild Theater in Manhattan) is returning June 8 - 9, 2012. EditFest NY is presented by American Cinema Editors (ACE) and Manhattan Edit Workshop (MEWShop). Over the course of the weekend, EditFest NY will present some of the best known and highly regarded east coast film editors who turned out to mingle, mentor, and present. Last year's event kicked off with an industry insider’s view of how to break into the editing business. The panel was followed by an opening night gala, a wall-to-wall party where panelists from every EditFest NY panel mingled with rapt attendees.
The accomplishments of an editor can be both mysterious and underappreciated, and nowhere is this more evident than among the editors at Pixar Studios. I discovered their special role in the animation process when I visited Ken Schretzmann at Pixar shortly after he won an Eddie for Best Edited Feature Film in Animation for Toy Story 3. He then became the focus of my panel at EditFest NY; and after all our discussions I now realize how fully Pixar uses the editor’s talents, one of many brilliant strategies that has led to the studio’s extraordinary success.
The 2010 EditFest NY, presented by American Cinema Editors (ACE) and the Manhattan Edit Workshop, will give editors and those interested in editing the chance to learn from some of the best editors currently in the business, including the editors of Avatar, Precious and the Pirates of the Caribbean series—all of whom will be on hand to talk about their process and interact with attendees. Festival organizer Josh Apter, of Manhattan Edit Workshop, answered some our questions about the highly-anticipated event, which takes place on June 11th and 12th, 2010.
EditFest LA was launched with great success last year by ACE (American Cinema Editors) – the honorary guild for editors – and this year they decided to have EditFest NY on June 12th and 13th at the Directors Guild Theater. This was the first event of its kind: two incredible days of panel discussions where many of the most respected and well-known editors analyzed their work and careers for an eager audience of up-and-coming filmmakers.
EditFest NY is presented in cooperation with ACE, the honorary society of motion picture and television editors. A number of the most honored editors have confirmed their participation, and more are expected.
