Media Composer Fundamentals I (MC101) is the first step in achieving confidence, creativity, and efficiency with Avid Media Composer, the non-linear film/video editing application used in most movie and television productions. Together with the second course in the series, Media Composer Fundamentals II (MC110), this course provides the foundational training required to achieve the credential of Avid Certified User | Media Composer.

Media Composer Fundamentals I is an introductory course designed to get a new user up-and-running on the software.  In this course, students develop an understanding of the video editing process and the basic skills to edit a video project from start to finish. This includes understanding the relationship between media and project files, media storage location, the abilities to create the project file; bring in the source video and audio files; edit the sequence, add titles, music, and basic effects, and then export the finished sequence.

Who should attend? Editors, Assistant editors, and Multimedia producers. This course is also appropriate for Avid Symphony users.

Prerequisite:  

  • No experience with Avid Media Composer is necessary

  • A working knowledge of Windows or Macintosh or operating systems

  • A background or experience in editing, production, or post-production is recommended

Our MC 110 class is a three-day course that introduces the concepts of nonlinear editing and includes all basic features of the Avid Media Composer system for Macintosh.  

An intermediate course, this course is designed to teach students the technical and organization skills of an assistant editor, and develop their editorial skills with the tools and techniques required to produce a well-edited video.  From using dynamic trim techniques to shape the actor’s performances in a dramatic scene, to quickly assembling a news package to meet deadline, this course empowers novice users to take their Media Composer skills to the next level. Class projects and exercises are hands-on, giving students the opportunity to work on an unscripted documentary project, as well as a scripted comedy scene.

Media Composer Fundamentals I & II - $1,995

This five-day course bundle combines our MC 101: Media Composer Fundamentals I and our MC 110: Media Composer Fundamentals II to provide the foundation for the Media Composer User Certification Exam.

You will first learn about the interface and basic editing techniques before moving on to trimming, fine-tuning the edit, adjusting audio, handling multi-camera editing, adding transitions, adding titles, and outputting your finished project. The training is hands-on and features project-based lessons in which you work on real-world projects ranging from extreme sports to dazzling documentary footage.

Once you know the basics of the editing tools, you are ready to learn the fundamentals of creating effects within Avid Media Composer. You will be taken through the basic effects-building interface; then you'll learn fundamental audio adjustments and effects, multilayered video compositing, tracking, stabilization, various retiming methods, and basic color-grading techniques.

Prerequisite: No familiarity with the system is necessary. Completion of a Macintosh introductory course or equivalent experience is required. A background in editing, production, or post-production is strongly recommended.

Pro Tools Fundamentals I - $1,095

Our two-day Pro Tools Fundamentals I (PT101) course introduces fundamental Pro Tools concepts and principles, covering everything an individual needs to know to complete a basic Pro Tools project, from initial setup to final mixdown.

This course covers Pro Tools concepts and techniques that range from beginner to intermediate-level. Students learn to build sessions designed for commercial purposes and improve the results of their recording, editing, and mixing efforts. The hands-on exercises provide experience setting up sessions, working with digital video, using loop recording and MIDI Merge techniques, working with virtual instruments, warping with Elastic Audio, applying Real-Time Properties, creating clip loops, applying signal processing, using automation, and using submixes and groups to simplify a final mix.

Together with the first course in the series, Pro Tools Fundamentals (PT101), this course provides the training required to prepare for the Avid Certified User: Pro Tools.

Who should attend? 

Musicians, Audio Engineers, and Sound Editors for Film or Television.
